Scoring Tester

Good scoring is necessary in order to :
- Obtain exact dimensions of the box
- Avoid kinked boxes
- Avoid angle crackling and, also, consequently, tightness loss
- Avoid bulged boxes because of insufficient scoring
- optimise the productivity of the scoring, the filling and conditioning machines.

The usual tests until now were visual controls and bending measurements. nevertheless the bending test requires a preparation of a conditioned sample in the lab in order to obtain repeatable and valid results. But these results will not provide information to the operator of how to accurately set the scoring knives.

The innovation
The French Research centre fot the pulp and paper inductry - C.T.P. - developed a new scoring tester measuring the exact geometry of the scoring, ot,the scoring counterpart.
The information obtained can immediately be used for adjustment corrections of the top and bottom scoring knives. this has been confirmed by the fisrt users.
The optical gauge, industrialised by TECHPAP, is a compact piece of equipment, connected to a PC. the gauge only needs to be placed on the score of the blank (not conditioned !). A very fine laser line is projected on the score under the gauge. An integrated camera transmits the image of the deformed line by the score to the PC, especially equipped for video analysis. To obtain a measurrement, only click on the button of the gauge.

On the PC screen are displayed :
- the image of the score geometry
- height of the scoring
- width of the scoring
- centering of the scoring.
These values are calculated with an accuracy of 1/100 mm. The PC displays also average values, statistic data, tolearance - threshold overpassing. For each measurement it is possible to save, to load or consult a file.

In Practice
The gauge is strongly built in order to be used near the machine, so that the operator can check or adjust the settings :
- the centering measurement allows the operator to re-center the scoring knives or to adjust the parallelism, in order to avoid early wear of the top and bottom knives and to eliminate kinked boxes.
- the height measurement allows the operator to optimise the opening of the boxes.
- it allows him also to optimise the width of the scoring lines, or to check the wearing of the knives.

The operator can consult memorised files in order to compare them with the present measurements.
The files inform him about :
- the used cutting die
- characteristics of the board
- references of the product
- date and time.
A menu "Parameters" (with a password) allows him to fix the conditions of new measurements.
