Retention Tester

Purpose
Especially designed for investigating the influence of any additive on pulp quality, the retention tester is an ideal and unique tool for controlling the setting up of new chemicals and paper products. As well as achieving consistency and the shearing of the suspension, the contact time with the additives, and the drainage conditions, the retention tester produces sheets that have technical characteristics closely related to those of industrial paper.

Principle
In the upper tank of the retention tester, the pulp is sheared and mixed with additives, under industrial conditions with regard to strenght and time. This first stage simulates the feed circuits of the paper machine.
The suspension is then transferred in the lower tank (formation tank). After a rapid homogeneization of the suspension, it is drained on the web by a strong vacuum. This stage simulates the headbox and the drainage part of the paper machine. The tank opens to recover the sheet. White water is totally retained.

Use
The retention tester is fully automatic. After the introduction of the suspension, a simple push button starts the cycle, after which it runs automatically with very high repeatability.
Units have the option of manual control too.
The retention tester has the ability to adapt itself to your requirements, with the following features :
- the duration of each sequence is easily programmable with 0,1 second accuracy,
- the shearing is adjustable with a digital display of the number of runs / mn
- 3 programmable outlets are available for automatic injection of products
- the use of industrial metal or plactic wires, bare or set up in a frame,
- the vacuum adjustable up to 600 mm Hg. A large vacuum tank ensures an appropriate drainage, even with high beaten pulps.
The controls are on the front of the unit. The upper tank, retention tank, and white water tank recovery are all transparent for maximum visibility.

Results
Sheets with a 19 cm diameter, from 20 to 250 g/m², are achieved with the retention tester.
Look-through and retention of chemicals similar to that achieved on industrial paper, even with regard to the spread of sheet thickness.
Very good reproductibility and regularity of the sheets, easily adaptable with regard to any paper machine, with possible re-use of all the white water.

Use
This handsheet former allows to test easily pulps, new-finished products and the influence of any kind of chemicals.
The retention tester is an ideal tool for chemical and paper laboratories. It can be used on industrial sites for trials or surveys. In the field of dyeing, the retention tester will be a very good tool and will distinguish wire side and felt side.

New option : Dynamic Drainage measurement
Easy installation on delivered Retention testers in shape of a kit.
Principle : a high precision vacuum sensor is installed on the white water vessel under the wire. an electric device stores the dynamic vacuum curve during the drainage, and restores the values in the shape of a ASCII -file to a PC or a chart recorder : the PC rebuilds the vacuum curve and can calculate a drainage index, a.s.o.
The first users have excellent results.
